ソフトバンクモバイルは3月14日、Appleの新型iPadを3月16日午前8時以降に順次発売すると発表した。ソフトバンクショップの旗艦店である銀座店では、同日7時45分よりカウントダウンイベントを開催し、孫正義社長をはじめ白戸家のテレビCMに出演中のトリンドル玲奈さんらも出席するという。また、全国のiPad取扱店では、事前予約をしていない顧客向けにも当日販売分が若干用意される。

発売まで1週間もある3月10日に、早くも新型iPadを買い求める列ができ始めたようだ（SlashGear）。ロンドンにあるApple Store旗艦店リージェントストリートには、iPadを入手しようと並ぶ2名の男性が確認されている。新しい第3世代iPadは、3月16日に発売開始となるが、Appleオンラインストアではすでに出荷予定が2〜3週間となっており、発売当日に入手するには直営店に並ぶのが確実だと思われる。しかし、少し早すぎる。

WebベースのiPhone/iPadテザリングツール「Tether」登場＝年30ドル

昨年11月にiPhoneアプリ「iTether」を公開したことで知られ、AndroidやBlackberry向けにもテザリングツールを提供しているTether.comは3月10日、iPhone/iPadをWebベースで3Gテザリング可能にする新サービスを開始した。 App Storeで公開された「iTether」はすぐに（わずか20時間で）削除されたが、新しいサービスはHTML5ベースのWebアプリとして提供され、価格は年間30ドル（今週と来週は初年度15ドルのキャンペーン中）となっている。 Tether for iPhone JailbreakすることなくコンピュータとAdHoc接続でiPhone/iPad（3G版）をWi-Fiモバイルルータとして利用可能とするツールで、以前のアプリのようにUSB接続する必要はなく、すべてワイヤレスで利用できる。なお、iPhoneをJailbreakしていても利用できるようだ。米AT&Tなどが提供するテザリングサービスよりも格段に安いが、キャリアやメーカーのサービス規制対象になるかもしれない。

ソフトバンクモバイルの孫正義社長は、マイクロブログTwitterにおいて、Appleが現地時間7日に発表した新型iPadの“Retinaディスプレイ”を賞賛した。今度の新しいiPad、とても画面が綺麗です。これを見て、今までのiPadを見るとその違いに驚きます。これはおそらく「iPhone 3GS」（163ppi）から「iPhone 4」（326ppi）へ移行した際に、ユーザが抱いたのとほぼ同じ感覚だと思われる。新しいiPadは高解像度“Retinaディスプレイ”（解像度2,048×1,536）が最大の目玉であり、前モデルよりピクセル数が4倍に増加し、『ハイビジョンテレビと比べても100万も多い』ピクセル数が9.7インチパネルに搭載されたことになる。新型iPadは3月16日に発売が開始される。

米Appleは3月7日（現地時間）、米サンフランシスコでメディア向けの新製品発表イベントを開催し、第3世代目となる新型「iPad」および「Apple TV」などを発表した。新型「iPad」は、予想または噂された「iPad 3」、「iPad 2S」、「iPad HD」などと呼ばれずに、単に「新しいiPad」または「新しい第3世代のiPad」と呼ばれることとなった。価格は4万2,800円からで、3月16日に発売となる。「新しいiPad」最大の目玉は、「iPad 2」比で4倍のピクセル数を実現した“Retinaディスプレイ”であり、『モバイルデバイスで最高のディスプレイ』だとされる。解像度は2,048×1,536（310万ピクセル）で、彩度は44パーセント向上し、『ピクセルが見えないぶん、写真も、記事も、ゲームも、画面全体がこれまでにない美しい』という。 “Retinaディスプレイ”をサポートするプロセッサは「A6」ではなく、リークされていた「A5X」チップが搭載される。グラフィックスのコアが4基にアップデートされたことで、「iPad 2」や「iPhone 4S」に搭載されている「A5」よりもグラフィックスパフォーマンスが2倍向上し、低消費電力設計により消費電力を抑えることでバッテリ寿命は前モデルと同じ10時間を実現した。また、メインのiSightカメラは、5メガピクセルの裏面照射型センサーを採用し、フルHD（1080p）の動画撮影にも対応する。そのほかにも、ワイヤレス機能として、4G LTEのサポートが加わり、音声入力も日本語をサポートする。 Appleは同日、iOSアプリのアップデートを行なっており、新たに「iPhoto」が加わったほか、Retinaディスプレイ対応の「iWork」アプリ（Pages/Numbers/Keynote）や「GarageBand」、予告編機能が加わった「iMovie」などを公開した。また、セットトップボックス「Apple TV」を刷新した。シングルコアのA5チップを搭載し、1080pのフルHD動画再生やiCloudとの連携をサポートする。価格は8,800円のままで、新しいiPad同様、3月16日に発売となる（イベント詳細はTsugawa.TVにて）。

AppleはApp StoreからのiOSアプリのダウンロード数が250億回を突破したことをうけ、各国の“オールタイムトップ25” をiTunes Storeで公開した。 iPhone版とiPad版のそれぞれについて、これまでにダウンロードされた回数がもっとも多い25のアプリが、有料版と無料版の2つに分けて紹介されている。日本版App Storeでトップに立ったのは、iPhone版無料アプリはSkype、同有料アプリはSleep Cycle alarm cloackで、iPad版無料アプリは産経新聞HD、同有料アプリはGoodReader for iPadとなった。トップ25のフルリストはiTunes App Storeで確認できる。

iOSの次期マイナーアップデート「iOS 5.1」が次世代「iPad 3」とともにリリースされるとみられるなか、次期メジャーアップデート「iOS 6.0」の使用履歴がArs Technicaのサーバログで確認された。同サイトの2月のトラフィックログのなかに、Apple本社付近からのアクセスがあり、さらにユーザーエージェントからみて、「iOS 6.0」を搭載したとみられるiPadが確認されるという。 Arsが確認したのは、「iOS 5」、「iOS 5.0.1（現行）」、「iOS 5.1」、「iOS 6.0」を搭載したiPadで、「iOS 6.0」のレンダリングエンジンは「AppleWebKit build 535.8」であり、現行「v534.46」よりも新しいバージョンだとされ、Safariのニューバージョンが試用されているようだ。また、アクセス解析Google Analyticsには、パネル解像度2048×1536ピクセルのデバイスが確認されており、おそらくは次世代「iPad 3」からのアクセスログとみられる。

日本経済新聞は3月1日より、新聞のページをめくるように閲覧できるiPadアプリ「日本経済新聞 for iPad」の提供を開始した。すでにiPhoneアプリは提供されていたが紙面ビューアーが利用できず、iPadユーザ待望のアプリが満を持しての登場となった。電子版有料会員はApp Storeでアプリを入手して、日経IDでログインすることですぐに利用可能だ（アプリからの電子版の申し込みはできない）。「朝刊」「夕刊」「プラスワン」のほぼすべての記事が紙面イメージで読め、リストやページ一覧機能を使えば一気にその日のニュースを把握できる。また、1週間分の朝・夕刊をバックナンバーとして保存可能（オフライン閲覧対応）で、記事検索に対応するほか、個別記事の切り抜き保存（最大200本まで保存可能）、AirPrint対応プリンタでの印刷、直感的な操作性、さらには電子版有料会員同士の共有機能までついている。単なる紙面ビューアーを超えた多機能アプリだ。日経は「創刊2周年特別企画日経スタートキャンペーン」を実施中。電子版は月ぎめプランが4,000円から提供されており、また、新聞を購読しているユーザはプラス1,000円で電子版を利用できる（日経電子版プラン一覧）。

AppleはiTunesやiCloud経由で配信できる新たな高品質オーディオ形式の開発を行なっているようだ。 The Guardianが28日付で報じたところによれば、この高音質フォーマットはストリーミング配信が可能であり、帯域幅やiOSデバイスのストレージに自動で適応できる特徴を持ち合わせるとされる。 Appleは「iTunes Match」で256KbpsのAAC方式を採用して配信しているが、この新しいハイクオリティフォーマットを採用する可能性があり、情報筋によると、ロンドンにある音楽スタジオ会社と協力して新フォーマットのオーディオファイルを準備しているという。この新技術を採用することで、Wi-Fiなどの高速データ通信サービスを利用できる際には優れたオーディオ品質の楽曲ファイルが取得可能となり、一方で3Gなどの携帯通信回線を使用する際には自動で音質を下げることができるとされる。リアルタイムにAACなどの低解像度フォーマットへ変換されるのか、それともいくつかの異なるリサンプルされたバージョンが事前に用意されるのかは不明。 Appleは新フォーマットを採用したサービスを3月7日（日本時間3月8日）に開催する新型iPad発表イベントで公開する可能性があるとされ、新しいストリーミング配信サービスの発表や「iTunes Match」の音質向上などがアナリストされるかもしれない。 AppleはiTunes専用マスタリング「Mastered for iTunes」で、iOSデバイスやコンピュータなどでも高音質なサウンドを提供するサービスを提供しており、また、パブリッシャーに対してもCDにおける標準値（16-bit 44.1kHz）を超える24-bit 96kHzでのファイル作成を推奨している。

MS、「Office for iPad」否定も飛び交う憶測

iOSアプリの投入に積極的なMicrosoftだが、The Dailyが報じた「Office for iPadがまもなくApp Storeに登場」という記事については、建前上、否定する姿勢を崩さなかった。今回、The Dailyは「Office for iPad」のプロトタイプ版を操作したとされ、アプリのUIはすでに公開済みのOneNote for iPadのようであり、また、Word、Excel、PowerPointがローカルおよびオンラインで動作していたとされる。 The Dailyは昨年からiPad向けOfficeアプリについて何度か報道してきたが、Microsoftはその可能性を否定してきた。 Microsoftは流出したスクリーンショットについて、「我々のソフトウェアではない」としており、「記事は正確ではない噂と憶測に基づくものだ」とする声明をNYTimesに寄せている。リークしたスクリーンショットには、Windows Phoneや次期「Windows 8」で取り入れられる「Metro」スタイルのUIが確認され、情報では、Microsoftが近いうちにApp Storeへの登録申請を行い、数週間以内には公開されるのではないかとされる。また、Android版は開発されず、公開済みのOneNoteアプリも「Metro」デザインを取り入れるという。 Microsoftは“WOA”ことARM版「Windows 8」（Windows on ARM）に次期「Office 15」（開発コードネーム）をバンドルさせる予定で、タッチ操作に主眼を置くアプリ開発を行なっていることからみて、iPadへの移植も容易であると思われ、さらに多くの憶測を呼んでいる。 “WOA”ではExplorerやIE 10が稼働する一方で、Metroスタイルアプリ以外の従来型ソフトは利用できず、エミュレーション機能も提供されない。そのなかで、Officeソフトの存在は大きく、競合するiPad向けに公開するのか否か注目を集めている。
